Threshold Moments
Have you ever experienced those uncomfortable seasons where you feel like you're in transition but can't quite put your finger on what's happening? These can be what we call threshold moments - times when God is moving us from one spiritual space to another, much like walking from room to room in your home.
A threshold is simply a transition from one space to another. Every morning, you move effortlessly from your bedroom to the bathroom to the kitchen without even thinking about it. Yet when it comes to spiritual growth, we often overcomplicate these transitions.
Sometimes we mistake spiritual growth for spiritual attack. While demonic opposition is real, we must be careful not to dismiss God's work of growing us up as believers. He's working things out of us and working things within us so that others can be blessed through us.
Picture your life as a sturdy box with six sides. This box represents structure - something we all need. We need structure in our finances, marriages, relationships, and families. God is a God of order, and we can carry a lot of weight when we have proper structure.
But here's the problem: we often function so much out of structure that we forget to be saturated with God's presence. What does saturation look like? The oil represents God's presence in our lives. When we worship, when we spend time in His Word, when we create margin for prayer - this is how we become saturated. But many of us experience only drops of oil rather than the continuous flow God desires to give us.
We get excited during worship, receive a testimony, feel blessed - but then life happens. Financial issues arise, relationships get strained, work becomes stressful, and the oil stops flowing. This is not because God's supply is limited, but because we stop believing He will supply.
We have a daily need for fresh oil. This anointing doesn't happen through some mystical experience where Jesus physically pours oil on your head. We receive this oil by:
- Being in His presence
- Reading His Word consistently
- Creating personal worship time at home
- Making margin for prayer daily
Sunday morning worship should give you a jolt, but it won't sustain you all week. Your job is to make saturation a lifestyle, spending time with God each day.
A favorite biblical threshold moment is David's anointing found in 1 Samuel 16:13. When Samuel anointed David as the future king, David didn't immediately start ruling. He continued tending sheep, knowing that he was at a threshold moment. He had the oil preparing him, but he needed work on his character behind the scenes.
This is exactly like us as believers. We're being saturated for a purpose. Maybe you don't see that breakthrough now, but don't give up, as you spend time in God’s presence, you have oil in reserve because you're saturated and there is power in staying saturated. Isaiah 10:27 declares, "The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing." When we stay saturated in God's presence, several things happen:
-
We become pliable. Just as an oil-soaked cardboard box becomes bendable and workable, our hearts become moldable in God's hands when we're saturated with His presence.
-
We experience separation. Light and darkness cannot fellowship together. The more saturated we become, the more we naturally separate from negativity, complaining, and wrong influences.
-
We carry His fragrance. According to 2 Corinthians 2:15, we become "a fragrance of God" to those around us.
We often try to push things through our own strength, but this only leads to exhaustion. Spiritual breakthroughs don't come through our control or manipulation - they come by the Spirit as told in Zechariah 4:6, "'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord."
This means creating a daily place for the Holy Spirit in your life. Whether it's a prayer closet, a corner of your room, or sitting in your car - establish a place where you have quality time with God every single day.
I want to give you practical steps to stay saturated.
-
Ask Better Questions - Instead of asking God "Why is this happening?" start asking "What's next?" Stop bringing only complaints to God and start seeking His solutions and direction.
-
Create Expectation - Write "Lord, surprise me" at the top of a piece of paper and start expecting God to do good things for you daily. Record what He does and then celebrate and praise Him! Expectation is a breeding ground for miracles.
-
Recognize God's Daily Benefits - Don't dismiss the small things. Did you have peace today? Clarity? Strategy? Did you sleep well? These are benefits from God that we often overlook.
When you’re in a threshold season, watch for these things. If you're feeling frustrated or in transition, ask yourself these natural questions:
- Am I nutrient deficient spiritually?
- Am I dehydrated from lack of God's Word?
- Am I tired from lack of spiritual rest?
- Am I battle-fatigued from fighting in my own strength?
- Am I discouraged from praying without seeing breakthrough?
If you answer yes to these questions, address them accordingly with God's Word. If you don't answer yes to these questions, recognize that God may be growing your spiritual muscle. Thank Him for putting you on the potter's wheel and for the fresh oil He's providing. Remember, "'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit' says the Lord."
Remember, when we develop an attitude of gratitude and stay saturated in His presence, we don't just change our circumstances - we change ourselves. And that oil gets passed on to bless others around us.
