Thriving Beyond Survival

Life often feels like a constant battle just to keep your head above water. You wake up each day focused on meeting basic needs, handling immediate problems, and making it through another 24 hours. But what if God has something more in mind for your life than mere survival?

Survival represents a state of existence where you're only thinking about basic needs - food, shelter, and safety. It's being caught in cycles of routine, doing the same things over and over again. Survival is just breathing.

Thriving, however, encompasses growth, fulfillment, and the pursuit of your God-given passions and dreams. When you thrive, you fully engage with what God has called you to be. Thriving is becoming. It's living with purpose rather than just existing.

John 10:10 reveals a powerful truth: "The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. But I have come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly." This verse shows us a dual reality - the destructive agenda of the thief versus the life-giving purpose of Jesus Christ.

The thief represents everything that opposes the life God desires for you. This isn't always a dramatic, obvious attack. Sometimes the thief appears as:

  • Fear and anxiety
  • Discouragement and hopelessness
  • Attractive distractions that slowly pull you away from your calling
  • People, jobs, or desires that separate you from God's plan

The enemy's strategy is simple: if he can't destroy you, he'll try to distract you. If he can't defeat you, he'll try to delay you. But here's an important truth - hell wouldn't be fighting you if heaven hadn't already anointed you.

Survivors often say, "Let the devil have it. I don't really need it anyway." But thrivers declare, "He's not getting anything that God has promised me." They refuse to let the enemy steal their children, finances, health, or purpose.

You have access to what belongs to you in God's kingdom but you must activate your faith to access what God has destined for your life. Proverbs 23:7 tells us, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." The difference between surviving and thriving begins in your mind. Your life will never rise above the level of your thinking.

Some people stay stuck because their thinking never changes. They get saved, but mentally they remain in survival mode. Survival thinking says:

  • "I guess this is just my life"
  • "I'll just settle here"
  • "Just give me enough to get by"

Thriving thinking declares:

  • "God has something greater"
  • "I refuse to die in the wilderness"
  • "God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all I can ask or think"

The moment your mind shifts, your future shifts. When God changes your mind, He changes your direction.

Jesus didn't die so you could barely make it. The word "abundant" means overflowing, excess, more than enough. He died so you could live in overflow - overflowing joy, peace, and purpose.

Abundant life is marked by a deep relationship with God as your source, by hope and joy even in difficult times, by embracing the gifts and talents God has given you and by bearing fruit because you're connected to Jesus.

Your circumstances don't define you, and your past doesn't determine your destiny. There's only one definition over your life and that is what God says about you.

James 4:7-8 provides the key: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Resisting means you don't have to answer when the enemy comes knocking. Just because he's at your door doesn't mean you have to let him in. You can choose not to pay attention to his lies and distractions.

When you stay connected to Jesus, drought cannot stop your fruit. The same power that saved you is the power that sustains you. Like a branch connected to the vine, you don't struggle to produce fruit as you stay connected to Jesus - it flows naturally from the source.

You must activate your faith to access God's promises. When you call on God's name and activate your faith, you can access the abundant life He's provided. You were created to walk in abundance and be a testimony of God's goodness.
